The day is yours... your imagination is set free... this is the world I like to hang out in. Also, as a former Visual Arts teacher, Snow Days were spent in my art studio. Now it's every day!Genevieve Kellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00627370204603180362noreply@blogger.comBlogger162125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1029427423801979205.post-4280655991544288122024-02-03T07:02:00.000-08:002024-02-03T07:02:17.710-08:00Happy Birthday ~ Super Star!<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHqr2qBvt1X6pfrArVfkxkajyrqzu1JKmLlqqC57X40ecC1WO_bzr4lpQz9c-jHpjXke2EHnDxPE67rTroQzm0QRP4ALNIJb27UiuYjARuGp12aEL4Rcx6vdO7TYijrn0vfLfxsvTNHD2QE5I_A28vNmvZZ4BVJzQhv_4fXBSgSmFUwP-W399mQ3c5ls/s1867/Genevieve-Keller-Mouse-Birthday-Card.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1867" data-original-width="1429" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmHqr2qBvt1X6pfrArVfkxkajyrqzu1JKmLlqqC57X40ecC1WO_bzr4lpQz9c-jHpjXke2EHnDxPE67rTroQzm0QRP4ALNIJb27UiuYjARuGp12aEL4Rcx6vdO7TYijrn0vfLfxsvTNHD2QE5I_A28vNmvZZ4BVJzQhv_4fXBSgSmFUwP-W399mQ3c5ls/w306-h400/Genevieve-Keller-Mouse-Birthday-Card.jpg" width="306" /></a></div><div>Here's a little artist mouse ready to wish one of your favorite humans a super Happy Birthday! I'm calling it 'Love is in the Air'. This bear has the sweetest face and he was a lot of fun to paint. I do realize that he is holding the violin.... not correctly, but perhaps this is how bears hold violins? My apologies to any violin players out there.<p></p><p>It was 'Eggpiphany' here the other day! Our chickens started to lay! We got 2 beautiful blue-green eggs. (I will not make that a capital "c" even though my computer wants me to.) With grandchildren under the age of 5, it's tough not being together. We did Facetime. We will get together soon. I'm actually thinking of exchanging a gift before we do. I think a little pullover I got one of the kids is too small. I could just buy this little guy a box of crackers and he'd be content, he's the happiest little soul.<p></p><p>This 'new beginning' time of year is always one of reflection for me. I lost a painting I was working on (stay with me, there's a connection here). I can't stand to lose things, and I'm the 'family finder' when things get lost. Well, I searched my studio from 'top to bottom' and could not find this painting. To be clear, a visual: the painting was a 5" square birch wood panel, 3/4" deep. Not big. But when something is lost in my life, well it was like losing a billboard. This loss inspired a 'deep clean' of my studio, and THAT was the perfect 'new start' to my new year. I think I may start every new year this way. Sighting 'When In Doubt, Throw It Out' as I went, I worked my way through draws, files, boxes, under the couch, etc. Of course I did find the painting. The little booger slipped down behind a stand of drawers. It landed on the wall/floor molding, and so in not reaching the actual floor I didn't see it when I looked under the drawers. Sneaky, very sneaky. (This whole episode has changed my relationship with this painting and I find that fascinating, but now I am truly off topic). I'm happy and my studio is clean. It was a fantastic trip! About a third of the time was spent at Gros Morne National Park, a truly remarkable place. Camping out of our Four Wheel Camper (Fleet model) was fun and cozy. We had very good weather for this trip. The one day it rained hard was also the day we were driving across the province. We did lots of hiking which was great for the dog. We saw puffins, moose, all kinds of birds, and bananas... and more bananas! Someone told me recently that the Irving gas company owns a banana plantation. I have no idea if this is true or not. I can verify that there are bananas for sale everywhere in Newfoundland, and there are a lot of Irving gas stations, thankfully! (the best bathrooms!) Here are some photos. Note: that dilly hummus was the bomb!<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ99GvntF0CWi2__j1c_K6nDRe2Qwd0bMOUMmQVWkgIa6sKkjUMPM2bJVzqdd89R16ZQNqWlNwGiYEkW0xSnbZjuwUP1Z3I4ISoNyeFSOaY6r2haijXRP8HPS1ICQyQqPPzBex3E5i4LqK97xo7GTqkAmppB-3egSD_Oz4y4OQlqM2QYytX_uz-ZL4ebw/s4032/IMG_2398.HEIC" style="clear: right; This is such an honor. The gardens are gorgeous and quite comprehensive. It's worth going several times a year just to see what is in bloom. At year end, Gardens Aglow is a 'must see' with thousand of colored lights illuminating the gardens and trees. The Gift Store is a wonder in itself. I did a bit of shopping last week when I dropped off my cards. I got a sunhat with a neck flap for gardening and some very sweet little wooden replicas of the 'Guardians of the Seeds' sculptures.<p></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxuZ_fee8tBZO7BBi2J0CQbQMmzapV4UkFbBcNqaLh6Vd-GBDhmYi8lJi0-xGcHKngkhiJibkjfSsG6UwufG5nAEJuxTzDaNfOSbgoYcrxZ4QhZLjQlw5SBRcwHrBabWL_fGHuQ8zuqmJwsI_pe6EvlYPX2trC5hjGp99dgQxWIu0OCEL7dKcF5khPnfU/s2016/Genevieve-Keller-Sweet-Peas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2016" data-original-width="1512" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxuZ_fee8tBZO7BBi2J0CQbQMmzapV4UkFbBcNqaLh6Vd-GBDhmYi8lJi0-xGcHKngkhiJibkjfSsG6UwufG5nAEJuxTzDaNfOSbgoYcrxZ4QhZLjQlw5SBRcwHrBabWL_fGHuQ8zuqmJwsI_pe6EvlYPX2trC5hjGp99dgQxWIu0OCEL7dKcF5khPnfU/s320/Genevieve-Keller-Sweet-Peas.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsHyH0-P70NwlTT0zHdREsv7POebonZNNqJ3aUEJVzSGf3agVGESJLVs5kGRBpV_s6RbiJSUMwMRkwuQ95SMLLY5HQyuZC6lhutEpvr8_tJolPhxU5mVDMzXPJ10VMQivuwJet4-Jfi-SLB9bprI_Jmymx_nmKsJ1R9sHXV5td-suDo3CY7QjfdLf-Gj8/s1864/Genevieve-Keller-Maine-Wild-Blueberries.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1864" data-original-width="1398" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsHyH0-P70NwlTT0zHdREsv7POebonZNNqJ3aUEJVzSGf3agVGESJLVs5kGRBpV_s6RbiJSUMwMRkwuQ95SMLLY5HQyuZC6lhutEpvr8_tJolPhxU5mVDMzXPJ10VMQivuwJet4-Jfi-SLB9bprI_Jmymx_nmKsJ1R9sHXV5td-suDo3CY7QjfdLf-Gj8/s320/Genevieve-Keller-Maine-Wild-Blueberries.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>These are the 6 designs I dropped off. I had never been to Michigan before. It was a fun trip, almost 3,000 miles in our pop-up pick-up camper. Michigan is a beautiful state. Upon my return I jumped into a month long painting project... and... ignored (almost) my gardens. The painting now complete, I've been a weeding warrior woman trying to get my 3 gardens back into shape. Summer is such a busy time on a small farm. Tomorrow we're getting 4 baby chicks in the mail. 2 Bard Rock and 2 Buff Orpington. These will grow into laying hens. We raised 20 organic meat birds this spring and for the first time we processed them ourselves. Our freezers are full!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCoDTR7pUhEeBqox7OlqCxFMYbu1FAJE2ujgg5ee-_WTtOS7WoiHHdBEqmnyY4tM6oS2jMXe2uKpIPrhs3Nu4mmiYdP9f9vH5FWRhzawLJV2ZDRpizkgikxHW6zemN1X4FIaCk920ED7X6vqUVASljty9jNN4hH59J44Nupw3bMLw0sn9USd-_zef-9xI/s2016/Genevieve-Keller-Morning-Glory.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2016" data-original-width="1512" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCoDTR7pUhEeBqox7OlqCxFMYbu1FAJE2ujgg5ee-_WTtOS7WoiHHdBEqmnyY4tM6oS2jMXe2uKpIPrhs3Nu4mmiYdP9f9vH5FWRhzawLJV2ZDRpizkgikxHW6zemN1X4FIaCk920ED7X6vqUVASljty9jNN4hH59J44Nupw3bMLw0sn9USd-_zef-9xI/s320/Genevieve-Keller-Morning-Glory.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />Lots of maps are out on the dining room table. If you look closely you will see that they are of Newfoundland. We're planning a trip there in August-September. We'll be in the camper and we'll be taking the dog. I happen to work traditionally and I'm very happy doing so. I scan my work to clean up the images for prints, but I am a paintbrush, paint, pencil and eraser, kind of artist. Why bring this up? I guess it's the word 'traditional' that seems awkward to me because I don't feel 'traditional'. It's as though computer generated art and illustration has come along and pushed artists like myself aside. We get labeled 'traditional' because our use of media is not electronic. I'm struggling with this concept. I would rather be called something that sounds more alive. 'Original' doesn't work because electronically generated art can be fantastically and 100% original. I'll have to ponder this, or just get over it. </p><p> Meanwhile, here's a new painting. I've started a series in acrylic on birch wood panels. The series is 'Fabric and Flowers', and this one is 'Red Geranium'. Next up will be Daffodils. These paintings have a lot more detail than my botanical works. Lovely prints of Red Geranium are in my Etsy shop.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVPDe_WqgcFKhpLLhvFdO2kaFQtDwTjfKG2LPgQE11PDv2lAvDpcmf-fRX2dGvfXBmjotitV8xOnYi3y_81hU92cSV5ZikN6f-fFgJtW-NgVvDvK5woLOtRGIuXPHCc813Aq7O7tEACFj09dxqkEvoBQ7vvkiwOwo38CfcaPjX4vYrL8wf6VLbhBFQ/s3264/Your-The%20Beary-Best-Genevieve-Keller.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3264" data-original-width="2448" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVPDe_WqgcFKhpLLhvFdO2kaFQtDwTjfKG2LPgQE11PDv2lAvDpcmf-fRX2dGvfXBmjotitV8xOnYi3y_81hU92cSV5ZikN6f-fFgJtW-NgVvDvK5woLOtRGIuXPHCc813Aq7O7tEACFj09dxqkEvoBQ7vvkiwOwo38CfcaPjX4vYrL8wf6VLbhBFQ/w300-h400/Your-The%20Beary-Best-Genevieve-Keller.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>My Cut Your Own Tree card was a big hit for the holidays. As a second DIY card (where you cut and assemble) I'm working on a multi-purpose Happy card. It will be good for Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary, Happy Valentine's Day. I couldn’t resist doing Merry Chrysalis. I’ve had a good number of monarchs in my garden this year. Milkweed plants are treated with utmost respect and allowed to grow anywhere without disruption. It’s late summer and my favorite morning glories are creating a symphony right outside my kitchen window - an inspiration to do my dishes! </span></p><br />This has been the longest break I have taken since starting my blog 11 years ago. To be an artist, hopefully making a living doing so, one needs to appear on social media and share one's self - ON A REGULAR BASIS. Ah, but in there is the rub, or contradiction, or perhaps ruin. For me, being an artist means climbing high in a tree (metaphorically speaking) to be alone with my thoughts. Precious or perhaps ridiculous, my vaguely formed ideas are not yet ready to see the light of day - these ideas can not be shared or they will almost always FREEZE into the time and space when they were exposed like a camera flash. (Remember camera flashes?!) Imagine yourself on a path in the woods. If at some point you see a lovely tree and stop to shout to the world 'Look, here is a lovely tree!', you will miss what might be further down that path. This is what social media sharing is for me. Speaking too soon, stopping at the lovely tree, not letting ideas mix in the creative batter and soup of inspiration. Artist, Businesswoman, it's a tough juggle if you ask me. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEP8Go4AKrNM3vKij0UX1JER3YhtYBARegJT-WJYXrnCM5o_VNYMji-2koQeyQSht89ZOYomik8YdZSGU6ddwxCr0iTYs3TdDBQMbIVCmFfUBIOc6Pttshsvh0sSIbr5XKEoazCDausWHYYy3zL8_TbhapuZaRDN0EN9gD8nQdc4wU3OZvwkZoAawQ/s1800/Genevieve-Keller-Morning-Glory.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1800" data-original-width="1440" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEP8Go4AKrNM3vKij0UX1JER3YhtYBARegJT-WJYXrnCM5o_VNYMji-2koQeyQSht89ZOYomik8YdZSGU6ddwxCr0iTYs3TdDBQMbIVCmFfUBIOc6Pttshsvh0sSIbr5XKEoazCDausWHYYy3zL8_TbhapuZaRDN0EN9gD8nQdc4wU3OZvwkZoAawQ/s320/Genevieve-Keller-Morning-Glory.JPG" width="256" /></a></div><div><br /></div>So, dear universe, if you have found this humble blog coming from a little farm in Maine, and IF you were wondering where I went, know that I have kept to myself so that I may freely roam creative paths for the past several months.</div><div><br /></div><div>My flower gardens had a wonderfully flashy season this summer. He's kept us on our toes since early December. We're currently working with a very effective trainer in Montville because this innocent looking boy came with a suitcase of issues. Don't be fooled by the zen-like pose above! On the other hand, this picture explains why we love him whole heartedly. Note: I let him on this couch in my studio, but not the nicer furniture in the house. (He now knows the difference.) Originally back in October, he was starving and wandered onto the porch of a house in Georgia. The owners of the house fortunately got him into the canine rescue world and he ultimately made his way north to us. He's maybe 1.25 - 1.75 years old. We named him Renny. It will show you really care and you have faith that summer will indeed return in all its glory.</p><p>I think it's still early enough in the year to post this quote. The background photo is out back, it's what we have nicknamed our 'lower field'. It's hard to see but the Sheepecot River is in between the trees and the snow covered field. Here's to making a wonderful new beginning in 2022.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiJkYk_zf5yUgHz54tqAgl2eQozSm4Ai-YJdFoxiY5vn-RhU9sG_132DWjXtIhL6CXgydLorARpFA2jSgiQAtjqfHnXXHtRv6aPRB7DFUEGHGXp_Hk0CFK94wVvMtxRt65sqyfQ8Z5mQL4SLzgmnuXdromh6O571krFzpuLZsNHzZjMVaJDQ0wLmNLL=s3264" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3264" data-original-width="2448" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiJkYk_zf5yUgHz54tqAgl2eQozSm4Ai-YJdFoxiY5vn-RhU9sG_132DWjXtIhL6CXgydLorARpFA2jSgiQAtjqfHnXXHtRv6aPRB7DFUEGHGXp_Hk0CFK94wVvMtxRt65sqyfQ8Z5mQL4SLzgmnuXdromh6O571krFzpuLZsNHzZjMVaJDQ0wLmNLL=s320" width="240" /></a></div><p></p>Genevieve Kellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00627370204603180362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1029427423801979205.post-69422689106077580922021-12-31T09:56:00.003-08:002021-12-31T13:04:07.715-08:00A Little End of Year Story - The Tale of Despereaux<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: right;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCMUDLZBrqc0RtoNzTW_sZP1qStEAknq9EU457N1--hQLZ_0Fv-YvZU-TbZPYB5bOOxr6cv7UUQOW3KUUbX44efffjjI2v1Da0giZCpTKLfwJek_0XF6t9c_bVcxOd1A9hgSDzqHO536ztgr5MqxIExmw8sVJ91jgwQL2oU60m-h6ouFmYmjJhtXfe=s2642" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2642" data-original-width="1903" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhCMUDLZBrqc0RtoNzTW_sZP1qStEAknq9EU457N1--hQLZ_0Fv-YvZU-TbZPYB5bOOxr6cv7UUQOW3KUUbX44efffjjI2v1Da0giZCpTKLfwJek_0XF6t9c_bVcxOd1A9hgSDzqHO536ztgr5MqxIExmw8sVJ91jgwQL2oU60m-h6ouFmYmjJhtXfe=w461-h640" width="461" /></a></div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhiMtyTzXCOo8G3U2Vk5jnXjzT-16y3uo_zZHXVLPAB2p41ZhHWNR4x2ReN9GZCllaLS7zGbNCdFhoyACBOTLXuB-46VwQK7rJU-64nwFL-etvYVFP4ih-SkfnpL-1MBWAyFaRtZcjG8kNA7aJOpfZ8_SwpJ2-Eg_Ru5RYafsD78xNVutN6elFYykig=s3038" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3038" data-original-width="2280" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhiMtyTzXCOo8G3U2Vk5jnXjzT-16y3uo_zZHXVLPAB2p41ZhHWNR4x2ReN9GZCllaLS7zGbNCdFhoyACBOTLXuB-46VwQK7rJU-64nwFL-etvYVFP4ih-SkfnpL-1MBWAyFaRtZcjG8kNA7aJOpfZ8_SwpJ2-Eg_Ru5RYafsD78xNVutN6elFYykig=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A few years ago a dear friend and I discovered that we both loved this wonderful book by Kate Dicamillo - The Tale of Despereaux. At the time I was needle felting mice and this friend was shortly to become a grandmother - for the first time. My friend said she looked forward to the day when she could read this great book to her grandchild. In my mind this was 'simple math' and the answer was that I should make a needle felted version of Despereaux - the main character - as a gift for her and her grandchild. For some reason I initially thought my version of Despereaux should be the size of a stuffed animal toy. If you are not familiar with the main character please note here that his most notable identifying physical characteristics are that he is tiny and he has relatively big ears. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiU9Nx8vX2CJ3SDjxWzIuHoRCmuiwrW6Ezp_SzuvRo9_gc-ZcVTPP-dg8KAmY7utg3ZRPUV5FPUE0bY2_JA-np0jfL1bYgVG00KkOZufh2VNnOy8-1nSMpBR--LeHAAcXrFvSxgtEQxsac_EqDupIindCJ_4OVEb3E60hZvDMXnbWenxKkyBBhwaTgX=s3152" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3152" data-original-width="2370" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEiU9Nx8vX2CJ3SDjxWzIuHoRCmuiwrW6Ezp_SzuvRo9_gc-ZcVTPP-dg8KAmY7utg3ZRPUV5FPUE0bY2_JA-np0jfL1bYgVG00KkOZufh2VNnOy8-1nSMpBR--LeHAAcXrFvSxgtEQxsac_EqDupIindCJ_4OVEb3E60hZvDMXnbWenxKkyBBhwaTgX=w151-h200" width="151" /></a><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgFKxu-SDYZxAFZayflfaKaiP20roaGFn7T4gNGQht-8mAT2JbFrM_d6vsRYP6eBTZspvEx2gpXmUsU-rEdq2DlaOivfs-5FDXb1-p4SxbTFXxn9WZ-GwySJ4pYdgfXntnwnkPQ_5WejW40K8irp10okJWDCQ-9RvOqGxtMT5vNUBAZkCjln7fMTpyJ=s1953" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgFKxu-SDYZxAFZayflfaKaiP20roaGFn7T4gNGQht-8mAT2JbFrM_d6vsRYP6eBTZspvEx2gpXmUsU-rEdq2DlaOivfs-5FDXb1-p4SxbTFXxn9WZ-GwySJ4pYdgfXntnwnkPQ_5WejW40K8irp10okJWDCQ-9RvOqGxtMT5vNUBAZkCjln7fMTpyJ=s1953" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1953" data-original-width="1397" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgFKxu-SDYZxAFZayflfaKaiP20roaGFn7T4gNGQht-8mAT2JbFrM_d6vsRYP6eBTZspvEx2gpXmUsU-rEdq2DlaOivfs-5FDXb1-p4SxbTFXxn9WZ-GwySJ4pYdgfXntnwnkPQ_5WejW40K8irp10okJWDCQ-9RvOqGxtMT5vNUBAZkCjln7fMTpyJ=w143-h200" width="143" /></a></div><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">As I felted what I will call Despereaux #1 my interest started to wain, something didn't seem quite right. My evolving #1 did not feel like the wonderful illustrations by Timothy Basil Ering, and so #1 got shelved for a while, okay it was actually a few years. In the meantime I became a grandmother and found myself trying to explain to a two year old what the creature on my shelf was and this was a rather impossible thing to do. Fast forward to November of this year when my friend and I were to meet for a lovely little hike on Mackworth Island - sort a mid point between our homes in Maine. For a lark I decided to bring along Despereaux #1 and confess my never-completed-project to her. I left #1 in the car. We hiked. While hiking my friend mentioned that her grandchild was coming for the holidays and she thought that the time had come to read Kate DiCamillo's book to him. I of course said 'Well, I have someTHING to show you back in my car!' It was a bit embarrassing to share my big floppy #1 - but at the moment I did I realized there needed to be a #2 and he would be very tiny.</div><div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><br /></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjxXPPgF9wYbtsT8JJ3dthwPvAuYl7e3uNIYymYSX7qFdehIl9RXEnOvIWtkQr7t7KDrpNzGWcHw1jchf4qEaEN9fpxYUxYvG5sOc7TNZ1VukjkQjza75OqLpUPRIiQrqvKNKbDyq61zuZiDMSeCYgAyQZN5C-s94arbytJLYpyiyzEADqYqcMFDrY1=s3137" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3137" data-original-width="2219" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjxXPPgF9wYbtsT8JJ3dthwPvAuYl7e3uNIYymYSX7qFdehIl9RXEnOvIWtkQr7t7KDrpNzGWcHw1jchf4qEaEN9fpxYUxYvG5sOc7TNZ1VukjkQjza75OqLpUPRIiQrqvKNKbDyq61zuZiDMSeCYgAyQZN5C-s94arbytJLYpyiyzEADqYqcMFDrY1=w282-h400" width="282" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjNjN0q0vAfDjLiyDMV65FOesuHJKmCKgNhLDLPkh9TI7yjjqFz8ZxW2xFHeRJJZ00TEIutELdSx3lh3NI5uhxNUJOttsiKOWhKyNxZIkLcMcf6-ClSShR0_z2XHIOSMZdwhhi3tGl3gl5LYhgX_tGvVWD8kZPxo5hejoGzIKbM4U2prfd5hty-dh2w=s3264" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3264" data-original-width="2448" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjNjN0q0vAfDjLiyDMV65FOesuHJKmCKgNhLDLPkh9TI7yjjqFz8ZxW2xFHeRJJZ00TEIutELdSx3lh3NI5uhxNUJOttsiKOWhKyNxZIkLcMcf6-ClSShR0_z2XHIOSMZdwhhi3tGl3gl5LYhgX_tGvVWD8kZPxo5hejoGzIKbM4U2prfd5hty-dh2w=s320" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Despereaux #2 turned out very sweet and was the perfect size. It celebrates diversity in a subtle and woodland creature way. I suppose the chicken isn't a creature from the woods, but you get my point. I love the quote: 'When the Sun Rises, it Rises for Everyone.' <p></p><p>When illustrating, there are so many iterations of an idea. Pencil, eraser, and paper are wonderful companions while going on the 'idea journey'. It's so easy to erase, adjust, change your mind. Working with these 'traditional' mediums, there is always the hint, a slight pencil stain left behind when a new idea wants to be known and the previous one is removed. It's the history, the footprint, of the idea. </p><p>One thing I struggle with though, is the lost looseness, or fluidity of the original drawing compared to the final watercolor. This past year I've been adding ink lines with my watercolor painting, and I think this helps suggest some of the original drawing's character. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBY-oINp7wLcXmYEDD-SG7G1qNet3Cy4Emcyk2AwALQ6EaWNV6MNcI27OXGe5DRNISKscPYqxj9xwkNCAQfxBf4jSs4WLbcUKIbk-F8svTqCuYMI4epZoAxjkNnzGoGOgqHQIigDio6Nw/s2048/IMG_5408a.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBY-oINp7wLcXmYEDD-SG7G1qNet3Cy4Emcyk2AwALQ6EaWNV6MNcI27OXGe5DRNISKscPYqxj9xwkNCAQfxBf4jSs4WLbcUKIbk-F8svTqCuYMI4epZoAxjkNnzGoGOgqHQIigDio6Nw/s320/IMG_5408a.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>I considered hand drawing the lettering on this card, but did not because it would have taken too long and I'm lacking the confidence... maybe next card.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixypLKTvhuKIRNs93W7cgogCcks0zCPNN37ATCrM5MSF-IKkXhGmouWUcX8UV0C5uQ7HqSH_4vMYJG2TDiGKg9np2_vHynuGMCczWVb9bigi5KbUWpZKo0VAQTvEKhrgH2EQVo0n64cxE/s2048/IMG_E4426.JPG" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1535" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixypLKTvhuKIRNs93W7cgogCcks0zCPNN37ATCrM5MSF-IKkXhGmouWUcX8UV0C5uQ7HqSH_4vMYJG2TDiGKg9np2_vHynuGMCczWVb9bigi5KbUWpZKo0VAQTvEKhrgH2EQVo0n64cxE/s320/IMG_E4426.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Knitting Report: this is a sweater I started about 30+ years ago. I altered the original pattern (called 'Dancing Girls and Boys') to the point that it wasn't really coming together. I put the sweater away until earlier this year. In the end, it was too short. To solve this problem I cut the sweater in half right above the gray dancing boys. I then knit a 4th white diamond pattern and used the 'kitchener' stitch to marry the two halves back together. I'm quite happy with how it came together... except the overall design is a little 'loud' for my life at this point! Question: Do you write 'gray' or 'grey'. I just heard a saying that says Americans write 'gray', and people from England write 'grey'. Gray with an A for America, Grey with an E for England. First came my new greeting card (available on Etsy). Today it's these Chickadee Mittens. They are my 220th pair of mittens. Well, just since I started keeping track of mittens in 2012, I really have no idea how many I've made. The 'chickadee' bird graphic came from Ravelry - I designed the rest of the mitten around it. That vinegar is a miracle worker when it comes to removing layers of old wallpaper. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg52PWuSs1czzIIQ_ZD2yTooM6EWAoJWczAS-yk18N2JTn1QYO-37HyLrJswzJrGwwBMZHKUTadC-vTLI7_Xu9gS46f-uBvXjY4DlaoUrxIJL8AWU8L-94kiMTKPOnI0z66k8i6Zd843Ic/s2048/IMG_4590.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg52PWuSs1czzIIQ_ZD2yTooM6EWAoJWczAS-yk18N2JTn1QYO-37HyLrJswzJrGwwBMZHKUTadC-vTLI7_Xu9gS46f-uBvXjY4DlaoUrxIJL8AWU8L-94kiMTKPOnI0z66k8i6Zd843Ic/s320/IMG_4590.JPG" width="240" /></a></div></div><br /> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRozCqUaWI2HLfmBRu-jz-pOwEJsiT6gSFfuMNIloLcACKRzc7nE2TCrYoS7edqhm6LJUOz2D_KKE75ebVeebMwzLp2a7ge80SfHn5YOw8ywlfWNDYAZ4gCnymBgpyfTasPEE-4wQMdkc/s2048/IMG_4413.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRozCqUaWI2HLfmBRu-jz-pOwEJsiT6gSFfuMNIloLcACKRzc7nE2TCrYoS7edqhm6LJUOz2D_KKE75ebVeebMwzLp2a7ge80SfHn5YOw8ywlfWNDYAZ4gCnymBgpyfTasPEE-4wQMdkc/s320/IMG_4413.JPG" width="240" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj46Z44nAMbONOXQw8MmEezdUi9BFejkhC3djWPUYrdFK7Er6Gsxw-v2xmGpyF59FSjbpv7UY49qla_lsSVknw76gLSR8Cv6ppOt2vkXF_r8CHLd5pDkvJfVT1SL_1s7EC0NSDRMFvwQoY/s2048/IMG_4577.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj46Z44nAMbONOXQw8MmEezdUi9BFejkhC3djWPUYrdFK7Er6Gsxw-v2xmGpyF59FSjbpv7UY49qla_lsSVknw76gLSR8Cv6ppOt2vkXF_r8CHLd5pDkvJfVT1SL_1s7EC0NSDRMFvwQoY/s320/IMG_4577.JPG" width="320" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9w0G3rmzrMJcBP_hMt4maD1S0iUIYb_OGBNoPBqItCfF-Oqm7gwK8V3tY304VJF84YApm6YSaYiBFBrbYjRs2XvC1R2w4VksWP9FgiVCslkG_LZQJIjFwpGKNHsEdeIBWXR__epvTsWw/s2048/IMG_4411.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9w0G3rmzrMJcBP_hMt4maD1S0iUIYb_OGBNoPBqItCfF-Oqm7gwK8V3tY304VJF84YApm6YSaYiBFBrbYjRs2XvC1R2w4VksWP9FgiVCslkG_LZQJIjFwpGKNHsEdeIBWXR__epvTsWw/w150-h200/IMG_4411.JPG" width="150" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">On a sadder note, another thing I learned this summer is a little trick to do when burying an animal. When filling a spot in the ground that you don't want disturbed by curious wild creatures, first soak a rag in hot sauce and lay it about 6 inches below ground level. Sprinkle red pepper flakes on the rag and fill in the area to ground level. The scent coming off hot sauce and pepper flakes will deter any creature from thinking they might want to dig there. Now you know. Carry on.</div><p></p>Genevieve Kellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00627370204603180362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1029427423801979205.post-30460477115349788352021-06-06T18:08:00.001-07:002021-06-06T18:08:50.430-07:00Maine Flower Gardening<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8t4EzZIJby0R0Lcb6MIzqP7MJb7HzRsFJb9IRL_L3_NOGN4INzUxF68zrjbv42eh3exS7OEJal8AJqa9XQJMC_yIfZ8XuJR8gl0mn8Etl6KZUgsuqugGYxIryTevmri0QvKZq6e-JuDw/s2048/IMG_3574.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8t4EzZIJby0R0Lcb6MIzqP7MJb7HzRsFJb9IRL_L3_NOGN4INzUxF68zrjbv42eh3exS7OEJal8AJqa9XQJMC_yIfZ8XuJR8gl0mn8Etl6KZUgsuqugGYxIryTevmri0QvKZq6e-JuDw/w300-h400/IMG_3574.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>All these photos were taken today. I've been working in my gardens (that's weeding, weeding, weeding) and I'd say my gardening time is now paying off. There are so many flowers in bloom it's hard to keep track.<p></p><p>I save the seeds from my flowers. I need to watch closely in order to collect right when the seeds are ready. Though much of my garden is perennial plants, I save the seeds to expand my gardens or to give seed away. It's actually fairly easy to collect and save seeds, and it's very rewarding. Having grown up thinking that all seeds had to be purchased in a little envelope each year, it's been nice to learn that I can 'make' my own.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Rhododendron, over 30 years old.</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3oa_BkVuXR38js3fkFFwcb7TMPsDLlzXFPwf-40FhijsS4f_ytiHXK01zVhGGCkjVqPvLrV1PQN8cyA17CdIEePv6Q5nXvfesk19C4AVy5m6Jw-yiQgG5BW-MOxbaU1IKoMhjhkCQrtk/s2048/IMG_3607.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3oa_BkVuXR38js3fkFFwcb7TMPsDLlzXFPwf-40FhijsS4f_ytiHXK01zVhGGCkjVqPvLrV1PQN8cyA17CdIEePv6Q5nXvfesk19C4AVy5m6Jw-yiQgG5BW-MOxbaU1IKoMhjhkCQrtk/w480-h640/IMG_3607.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4R2y3-C782pDgH07-Yka9CCfRSMNi9pzb6OJ27mlir9HdqpyEXCQwFGeWLylfOUradlUXr6F0ZLpMAJAzya3RfwxXWgvmt-oiYeEa6sCFtWJHbA1KKswIYRR3XvZFeXtNFH2MfKaBvrE/s2048/IMG_3621.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4R2y3-C782pDgH07-Yka9CCfRSMNi9pzb6OJ27mlir9HdqpyEXCQwFGeWLylfOUradlUXr6F0ZLpMAJAzya3RfwxXWgvmt-oiYeEa6sCFtWJHbA1KKswIYRR3XvZFeXtNFH2MfKaBvrE/w300-h400/IMG_3621.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>I'm particularly fond of Lupine - seen here in the foreground. These new specs are subtle, not like printing sizes or paper orientation. More like subtleties in the quality of the images being printed to the point that I was no longer satisfied with what said 'smart' printer was creating. I've had to find new card stock that works well with my artwork, not an easy accomplishment in a time of pandemic. I like to feel paper, check it's brightness and weight, know my choices and possibilities, etc. Fortunately I have found new paper that I'm happy with and it's been a big relief. Having a 'fancy' printer that (seemingly secretly) updates itself is sort of like realizing your teenager has a whole life you don't know about. 'When did THIS happen?' 'Why wasn't I told?' 'Do I get a say in the matter?' I'm glad to be back on the same page and creating beautiful prints.<p></p><p>I have two new cards out and available locally at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sheepscot.general" target="_blank">Sheepscot General Store</a>, and always online at: <a href="https://www.Etsy.com/shop/GenevieveKeller" target="_blank">www.Etsy.com/shop/GenevieveKeller</a>. I'll have frameable prints of both available online soon. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ87dQK4gul4AmP_94xGYCh7zC3I3oeF2zUM50REyDXtmT22sbDvuR6CZVsuSuCbSwNHjURhHtAvgSSrWTsAhxUp0zsATDS0CxlBGTV530_5XOEUe_eST8CIRKXYcM85tAVTKViJ6MY1I/s2048/IMG_2705.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1732" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZ87dQK4gul4AmP_94xGYCh7zC3I3oeF2zUM50REyDXtmT22sbDvuR6CZVsuSuCbSwNHjURhHtAvgSSrWTsAhxUp0zsATDS0CxlBGTV530_5XOEUe_eST8CIRKXYcM85tAVTKViJ6MY1I/w339-h400/IMG_2705.jpg" width="339" /></a></div><br />These two new illustrations represent two of my styles. The Poppies and Bees are what I'd call my botanical work. The Flower Fox is from my more whimsical side, possibly looking a bit like children's book illustration. I've questioned myself over time as to the effectiveness of having more than one style. Translation: successfulness. As an artist when one's work is varied will you ever be recognized for your work? Or will you confuse people? Recently, I read Lisa Congdon's book 'Find Your Artistic Voice' and I flat out got over worrying about having so many avenues of creativity. I highly recommend this book to any creative person, it was a very good read. (You will need to read this under good lighting though, the font was quite small and pale, maybe gray not black?)<p></p><p>I felt my Flower Fox illustration was appropriate either without words, or as any number of cards: Happy Birthday, Mother's Day, Thank You, and Thinking of You. In the end... this card is available in all the ways mentioned. Why not? She's a sweetie and she just wants to travel out into the world greeting people!</p><p>Next up? It apparently takes them a couple of hours to fully add color. The artist learned this technique in art school (college). I know this method is commonplace nowadays, and I was actually jealous... for a few moments. <p></p><p>My process starts with wetting and stretching Arches hot press watercolor paper (140 lb.) onto a board, one of several boards that I have used too many times to count. This beginning is almost spiritual, like I am communing with the paper and the possibilities that lay before us both. (In case you are wondering, I too learned my method in art college.) On drawing paper, I sketch my ideas in graphite pencil and then transfer the drawing onto the (now dry) Arches paper. My 'adding color' involves days... even weeks of painting in watercolor. My process slowly takes form through the layering of paint in a 'dry brush' fashion. Along the way this can be a give and take, sometimes removing paint to the extent it's possible with watercolor. Ideally, I have a few paintings to work on simultaneously. I find my paintings need to sit and have 'a peaceful time out' while I contemplate another painting. I can then return to each in turn with 'fresh eyes'. It works. It takes a long time. I listen to classical music and books on my phone. It's a good life. What pulls me from my work? My dog. <br /> </p><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYYrx_eEL5hfvR08V75TNUg7q1oFFyU3cTNkCk7z2qZdpwzN8ZwrbnaxuqkU3I8NiESRTgbnFtZtbRNNEIyl4NwgNNOwdPa3BJNtBLeGat5uMjV6DVM6Gs88AYlJVsJOfqLTMiwU5FjWg/s2048/IMG_2087.JPG" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYYrx_eEL5hfvR08V75TNUg7q1oFFyU3cTNkCk7z2qZdpwzN8ZwrbnaxuqkU3I8NiESRTgbnFtZtbRNNEIyl4NwgNNOwdPa3BJNtBLeGat5uMjV6DVM6Gs88AYlJVsJOfqLTMiwU5FjWg/s320/IMG_2087.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim9WbE8ZdxhgAAOQu0C7yXSkJ2giZQWmxXZaBUzl9zqQTp-wTJtfPyzE_haCru8YCVby0_WbDSrXEnVoUwkvAa5dNYR2W2RuEoCg_GBnN98upmQkw3s3Hh94Rwq2lslLFNgV8765aOGTI/s2048/IMG_2091.JPG" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim9WbE8ZdxhgAAOQu0C7yXSkJ2giZQWmxXZaBUzl9zqQTp-wTJtfPyzE_haCru8YCVby0_WbDSrXEnVoUwkvAa5dNYR2W2RuEoCg_GBnN98upmQkw3s3Hh94Rwq2lslLFNgV8765aOGTI/w480-h640/IMG_2091.JPG" width="480" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View from my studio, February 2021</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="text-align: left;"></span><br /><span style="text-align: left;"></span></div></div>Genevieve Kellerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00627370204603180362noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1029427423801979205.post-25255043212769628252021-01-13T16:56:00.001-08:002021-01-13T16:58:45.367-08:00New Greeting Card Design<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYcrUK81QJ8TVU_3Kmup-9suXGiUXmTbl8l7bRqjTmwWZMOscPw_aCoytR30-Nh6iTywzUaC76DK6qV6AxnBl-50bYmaEpVHKjhNlfyQad2Oh3wsYb08FoOIIMso34UMIcL6sClBb7ms/s2048/IMG_1705.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1663" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYcrUK81QJ8TVU_3Kmup-9suXGiUXmTbl8l7bRqjTmwWZMOscPw_aCoytR30-Nh6iTywzUaC76DK6qV6AxnBl-50bYmaEpVHKjhNlfyQad2Oh3wsYb08FoOIIMso34UMIcL6sClBb7ms/s320/IMG_1705.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJ3dAtH0Cc_Y3o0mWE0oNOCaTcrh3i307-SzPayvHFtOoDw2gaUAZskVlOyPVR9tMzkPUrwKm43WCFaClixUHeYosNE78EtN7aD7aKdnCx8w-rnDfdtvgeYNCQlCmdqnvm-A7Pr-6raM/s2048/IMG_1716.jpg" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIJ3dAtH0Cc_Y3o0mWE0oNOCaTcrh3i307-SzPayvHFtOoDw2gaUAZskVlOyPVR9tMzkPUrwKm43WCFaClixUHeYosNE78EtN7aD7aKdnCx8w-rnDfdtvgeYNCQlCmdqnvm-A7Pr-6raM/w240-h320/IMG_1716.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Here is my latest greeting card! Every year a very good friend brings me a bouquet from her organic garden. This year she surprised me with a whole new range of colors as it is now a month past my birthday. I can't take my eyes off these deep rich reds and pinks. We've been eating tomatoes three meals a day! I made tomato bread and froze bags of tomatoes for the winter. My flower gardens continue to produce poppies and the fields are full of Queen Anne's Lace. This wildflower makes me think of snow, summer-time snow in the fields.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1929" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkwIDXMXvHfy2op8y6GEmnj60AwQtP7lEw3zSg4hyphenhyphennWXTN56QPrHBJaPPV3aIfLWM3EHU0lV-CqpzxGE-rLidieDP-djqGcBt_LRvrAhl6ThSu4p3noi_jUnF5w8rkUGgQ-3XST3Y4B_8/w376-h400/IMG_9593.JPG" style="text-align: left;" width="376" /><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNRrPYS9Z9DaDBOOk1PYEYC6qri6jvwGU2PYv7x_TydZzRfOjCvt4VNfI-T9gnIvl5VoSb7da3BYHTHiSZ1Qtebt6rh278ogCA-_D0unNZsvFGwBrvpzkoufO1v9wCj7bD2EuE3q5gzgA/w192-h256/IMG_9340.JPG" style="text-align: left;" width="192" /><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1929" height="256" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsnim4c9xYn7BOPo8QhRDfbRjTabnLmzB6L8JVkCpq4YpjRRSd3fR4tGSS6RoKRlV2qFiOoEjzqCugE9PoMcNUJBvrubaYEksKZNicBcR5lWOmqRCTop_l2YD6r4i2LSTOMZFsoLieUIA/w241-h256/IMG_9616.jpg" style="text-align: left;" width="241" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><br /><br /> <img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiry7QzxcbJV9UZIrAcye2edOKdN5jkRZxw4xAjaTlPsbQj8xbo8mibHDnwOW1oSC5MInV_MRFdoUX1UOamvj2cLBWHVsOlR1lbbpU0g4Qhr7Ov1x2Miim6YnLtQ-UGc_Rv7bDOQd0uf-U/w375-h500/IMG_9632.JPG" width="375" /> I've been doing some housekeeping in my studio this past month. A little rearranging of tables for my painting supplies, and much recycling for 16 years worth of teaching materials. <span face="">For me these past months have alternately flown and slugged their way through the spring into summer season. As with many of us, my days have been like a ride on a Ferris wheel. To cope or just add rhythm, I have been mentally summing my days in Haiku poems. Some poems are written down, others just bounce around on the wind. </span><br />
<span face=""><br /></span>
<span face=""><br /></span>
<span face=""><br /></span>
<span face="">Here's one:</span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">Pandemic painting</span></span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">isolating with color</span></span><br />
<span face="" style="font-size: large;">my soul saving work.</span><br />
<span face=""><br /></span>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbAjIX3wvpinkmzxJjSjIFnJJSyAexDTNp-hsMDO3U-O7FuqEls-cKMRKljT__zNAMP4_Wqa2HuKE6vSTsDmDqj6g1toTc0GH7UGGbDRvtgnB3vMnOnSrXmCwDKnERI6zfl36yiR9zSlU/s1600/IMG_8499.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="915" data-original-width="1600" height="182" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbAjIX3wvpinkmzxJjSjIFnJJSyAexDTNp-hsMDO3U-O7FuqEls-cKMRKljT__zNAMP4_Wqa2HuKE6vSTsDmDqj6g1toTc0GH7UGGbDRvtgnB3vMnOnSrXmCwDKnERI6zfl36yiR9zSlU/s320/IMG_8499.jpg" width="320" /></a><span face="">Another:</span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">Today, quietly,</span></span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">I retired from teaching</span></span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">health vs. children. </span> </span><br />
<span face=""><br /></span>
<span face=""> Yes, that's my big news. I've just retired. Yes, this was a huge decision. The good news is that I will be able to paint and create full-time. The very sad piece of this is that I will dearly miss the students. In a post-vaccine world I hope to see them again. </span><br />
<span face=""><br /></span>
<span face="">Here's one more for the gardeners:</span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">It's no boundaries time</span></span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">There used to be a limit</span></span><br />
<span face=""><span style="font-size: large;">Weeding all day long.</span></span><br />
